It is difficult not to fall for the charm of the Curonian Spit (Neringa), a place of outstanding natural beauty and well worthy of its UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Not only is it detached from the mainland of Lithuania (a short ferry ride across the lagoon), but it also feels detached from everyday life. In Neringa, life plods along at holiday pace, what with the slow speed limit, the gently smoking fish on the grill, and the lethargic footsteps needed to climb the sand dunes - this is the ultimate place to wind down!

But don't underestimate Neringa, there are plenty of things to do and see during your stay. A visit to Witches Hill scuplture park in Juodkrante is a must, along with a sailing trip from Nida, walk up the great sand dunes, hire bikes to explore the area, swim in the Baltic sea and read a good book on the beach. Alongside these, there are many activities and day trips on offer too.

There is also the option to continue your holiday into the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. From the sun dial on top of the dunes in Nida you look across no-mans land into Kaliningrad, Russia. This is hauntingly beautiful as the sand dunes continue into the distance and drop to the sea below, and also because hidden away in the dips of the dunes are crosses of memorial to the soldiers who died here in the war. The Russian side of the spit is less developed than the Lithuanian side, but this only enhances the richness of the nature (it is on this side we last saw a moose in the wild!)
