Lithuania
was the last country in Europe to give up paganism, and even
though this was back in the 14th century, there are still reminders
of those beliefs in Lithuania today. As you travel through the
countryside you will see ornate wooden crosses and carved statues
by the roadside, and listen to the local folksongs and legends.
This is a nation who are incredibly close to nature, with many
still fishing, hunting and cultivating their own food on their
land. There is a rich relationship with the countryside that
we have lost over generations, but are now looking to reclaim
- an organic lifestyle, back to nature, wild foods, living in
harmony with the environment... something the Lithuanians are
masters at.
As Lithuanians become more dependent on the cities for work
and lifestyle, they do not forget their rural roots and many
people have a summer house where they go to escape during the
holidays. The landscape in Lithuania is a mixtue of thick forests
and open agricultural land, criss-crossed with rivers and lakes,
making it ideal for a country retreat. There are several national
parks where the nature is protected, and there are excellent
facilities for enjoying activities such as cycling, hiking,
canoeing, nature trails and many working farms and craft workshops
to visit.
