Kaliningrad was once known as Koenigsberg, land of Teutonic
knights, capital of east Prussia, home of philosopher
Immanuel Kant, and one of Europe's finest looking cities.
That is until it became a casualty of some of the heaviest
fighting in WWII and much of the city was destroyed. Soviet-style
replaced Hanseatic. The city is steadily rising from its
historical ashes to become a quirky corner
of Europe to visit, a true testament to 20th century history.
A curious place for the discerning traveller.
A city break will give you ample time to explore the city,
and to take a day trip out to Baltijsk (the closed military
city, head of Russia's Baltic fleet), or visit Svetlogorsk,
the pretty seaside town of wooden villas, clean white
beaches and summer fun.
