With
only 1 person per kmsq in Estonia it is underpopulated and
rich with widespread unspoilt nature; a mixture of bogs, wilderness,
forest and lakes, wooden cottages, saunas by lakes, and isolated
manor house retreats. The Estonians are proud of their close
relationship with nature, they are very traditional people
and many traditional handicraftswho can still be spotted celebrating
pagan festivals. Nature has always played an important role
in Estonian life, from food for survival (berry picking and
mushrooming are still national pastimes), shelter from invading
powers (resistance groups hid out in the forests for years),
to providing a welcome retreat from modern life (it is customary
to spend sumer out of town at your summer house!).
Reminiscent of post-war Britain and days gone by, many people
grow their own fruit and vegetables, have their own cow or
goat, and appreciate what nature provides. You can get back
to nature with a holiday in an Estonian country cottage or
guesthouse!
We
